Understanding Tags in WordPress

One of the most vital features of WordPress websites and blog is ‘tag’. Tag is a method of categorization. This means that a blog post or article can be attached with a tag of specified category. You can make a tag exactly of keywords. One of the distinctive advantages of tags is that these work as back links because tags use HTML anchor tag.

These are often displayed in the form of a group of several back links which are also preferred by various search engines including Google, yahoo, Bing etc. for indexing in Search Engine Result Pages (SERPs). As tags are attached with a particular blog post they are also helpful in organizing the blog just like categories. A tag can be converted into a category.

One thing highly valuable for webmasters is that tags or back links are the life-blood of Search Engine Optimization. Sole purpose of SEO is to get web pages ranked in top pages of Search Results in various search engines. It is due to the back links that tag holds greater prominence than that of categories. For example, all of the tags attached with a blog post are likely to be indexed by Google and other search engines.

Chief Objectives of Using Tags

First of all tags direct the users to the relevant content they are searching for on blog or off your blog. Second, tags are quite useful for organizing blog content or posts. For example, when you click on a particular tag e.g. “September” all of the posts published in the month of September would be displayed at one go. Third, tags improve ranking of your blog in search engines.

In WordPress you can add as many as tags. There is separate “Tag” box for the same. If you wish to add several numbers of tags you can enter all the tags simultaneously with each tag being separated by comma.
